Where has the time gone?
Salvador Dali, “Soft Watch at the Moment of First Explosion” (also know as “The Melting Watch,”) 1954
The art genre of surrealism, of which Dali was a master, rejects logic, reason and natural order to get the viewer to ponder things anew. And time is an interesting thing to ponder. Why is it that summer seems to fly by? Ask almost anyone how their summer is going (especially up here in the Midwest) and a common answer is, “Too fast!” Time can be condensed and stretched. It can crawl if we are waiting for something—maybe results from a test or a much-needed vacation. Time can condense if we have too much to do and too-full schedules. When I’m in the middle of writing, time flies by. But if I’m doing an unpleasant task, time crawls. Once I heard the quote, “As if you can kill time without injuring eternity.” Now, that gets you thinking!
But as I ponder what time I have and how I use it, I remember what we all probably know—the best thing we can do is live in the present. How much time do I spend planning the future? Too much. How much time do I spend regretting the past? Too much. My summer motto is to spend as much time in the “now” as I can.
If you can, stop, take some time, be pulled into the presence of the Almighty, and relish the moment.
Being Human connection: “Walk in wisdom… making the best use of the time.” (Colossians 4:5); “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)
